Professional experience
I have been in private practice since 1983, seeing adults and adolescents on a variety of
issues including divorce adjustment, relationship issues, parenting, and having it all (combining work and love). I have also worked in high schools helping students to deal with self-esteem, sexuality, and identity issues. In addition I have trained masters and doctoral candidates in psychology in their work with adults. I have also worked at a Veteran Affairs Outpatient Clinic helping both Vietnam and older veterans to deal with their relationships and other stressors.
Clinical interests
For years, I have been interested in adults’ love relationships, those which work and those which don’t. I wrote my dissertation on divorce and the consequences for both parents and their children. I have lectured to singles groups on the topic “Why do the good ones look so boring, and the difficult so alluring?” I think that there are answers from our past that help explain why we often pick similar people, even though they may look different from each other. They usually stir up similar issues for us, until we understand ourselves more thoroughly and see what we bring to the dynamic. I have been very interested in why some people remain in relationships that are not satisfying while others move from one relationship to the next. I am also interested in understanding how we can help young people to have the kind of good feelings about themselves which will help them to make satisfying choices of partners.
Practice information
I now see people from 12 to 80 years of age. The bulk of my practice is people in their 20’s through 40’s who are dealing with loneliness, emptiness, feelings of loss, betrayal, and ennui. Many are eager to find the relationship which they believe will make them come back to life and give them energy and fulfillment. Others believe that they have already found the right person and are anxious to hold on to the good feelings they currently have. Our work together is to help them obtain and keep the kind of viable relationship that they want, as well as to feel fulfilled in their work lives.
Personal relationship status
I am married, have grown children from a previous marriage, and step-children from my current marriage. Having gone through divorce, single parenthood, remarriage and step-parenthood, I have personally experienced both joy and disappointment in love relationships. I am most fortunate now to have a very happy marriage to a man I had known and loved and left years ago in college. From that experience, I have learned that “readiness is all.” I had a lot of growing up to do with which my own therapy was instrumental in helping me. My own experiences, my psychological training and work with many, many people, as well as the passage of time have combined to give me insight, understanding, and empathy with the relationship issues that trouble people.
