Clinical interests

Specialized interests include psycho-spiritual issues, mood and anxiety based disorders, and relationship work. In 1998, I published an article in the journal Psychotherapy entitled, “The spiritually responsible psychotherapist: religious material in the psychotherapeutic setting”. This article addresses the interplay between spiritual and psychological well-being, as well as the responsibility of the therapist to recognize the distinctiveness of each. I also wrote (though did not publish) a book on the phenomenon of chronic dating, entitled, “All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go” (1999), addressing the role of fantasy and unconscious process in the search for a lifelong partner.

Love-Life biography
I began my search for a lifelong partner in my early twenties, as marrying and raising a family was always among my most cherished personal goals. Though focused on marriage, I encountered several obstacles to this goal while dating, but understood few of them.

One pattern that emerged was a conflict between my intellectual assessment of a potential partner and my emotional reactions. I had produced a hypothetical list of things I was “looking for”, based on qualities that I respected and admired. Yet, when I would date a woman with these qualities, I often felt no chemistry or experienced a vague uneasiness. Alternatively, when things “felt right”, my date would inexplicably not posses the qualities that I was certain I wanted in a partner.

Recognizing this pattern was an important first step in resolving it. It became obvious that I needed to reconcile my emotional and intellectual dimensions to commit myself to love.

After more than ten years of frustrated dating, I met my wife in the magical summer of 2001. Deliberately identifying my obstacles, and learning to understand the power of unconscious process as part of the equation empowered me to finally commit to a mature and healthy long-term relationship.
