Clinical interests
The main focus of my work centers around emotional intelligence which involves awareness of feelings, controlling one’s moods and emotions, understanding how emotions and thoughts interact, and influencing others’ feelings. I have conducted several research studies and have professional journal publications on this topic. Emotional intelligence is an important aspect of my work in counseling and psychotherapy. I have taught courses, served on advisory boards, and have made professional presentations on the clinical and educational applications of emotional intelligence. My edited book, Emotionally Intelligent School Counseling, is published by Erlbaum Publishers (2006).

I am particularly interested in how improving our emotional intelligence abilities leads to better adjustment in educational, social, work and family situations. As emotions are such a central part of our lives and our relationships, I have examined how emotional intelligence relates to adaptive and healthy personality. As a former music educator and music therapist, I have seen the power of creative arts in expressing emotions. Along these lines I have examined how music and aesthetics can be used as teaching tools for emotional learning, communication and personal change.
Love-Life interests and expertise
As a counseling psychologist I have had the opportunity to work with adults who present with a range of issues related to love life. I have counseled couples and individuals dealing with marital and family discord, divorce, relationship break ups, sexual problems, and communication difficulties. The graduate level courses that I teach focus on interpersonal process which emphasizes how one’s relationships are influenced by personality, family dynamics, individual needs, communication styles, and cultural background.
Practice information
In my private practice I see individuals, couples and families. I also provide services in psychological testing, career development, and consultation.
Personal relationship status
My wife and I have been married for many years and we have two wonderful young children.
